Early Life and Education
Charles Ellis Schumer was born on November 23, 1950, in Brooklyn, New York. He graduated from James Madison High School and later earned a bachelor's degree in sociology from Harvard College and a Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School.
Political Career
Schumer began his political career as a Democratic member of the New York State Assembly from 1975 to 1980. He was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1980 and served until 1998. He was elected to the United States Senate in 1998 and has served continuously since then.
In the Senate, Schumer has held various leadership roles, including Democratic Caucus Chairman and Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee Chairman. He is currently the Senate Majority Leader, a position he has held since 2021.
